ATCOM - PROGRAM

The Medical Council of India has decided to implement Attitude and Communication module (ATCOM) in all medical schools across the country over the next two years. It is against this backdrop that the ATCOM module is prepared along with facilitators guide.

The overall goal of undergraduate medical education programme as envisaged in the revised Regulations on Graduate Medicalhttps://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5296311861500832883#editor/target=post;postID=6844583651013401819;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=0;src=link Education - 2012 (GMR 2012) is to create an Indian Medical Graduate (IMG) possessing requisite knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and responsiveness, so that he or she may function appropriately and effectively as a physician of first contact of the community while being globally relevant. In order to fulfill this goal, the IMG must be able to function appropriately and effectively in her/his roles as clinician, leader and member of the health care team and system, communicator, lifelong learner and a professional. In order to effectively fulfill the above mentioned roles, the IMG must obtain a set of competencies at the time of graduation. In order to ensure that training is in alignment with the goals and competencies, MCI has proposed new teaching learning approaches including a structured longitudinal programme on attitude, communication and ethics.

See the following post in this blog for the full details of the MCI ATCOM program for medical students that aims to train them in attitude & communication competencies -

CBME (COMPETENCY BASED MEDICAL EDUCATION)

Definitions
Competency framework: An organized and structured representation of a set of interrelated and purposeful competency objects.
Competency-based medical education: An outcomes-based approach to the design, implementation, assessment of learners, and the evaluation of medical education programs, using an organizing framework of competencies.
Domains of competence: Broad distinguishable areas of competence that, in the aggregate, constitute a general descriptive framework for a profession.
Competency: An observable ability of a health professional, integrating multiple components such as knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. Since competencies are observable, they can be measured and assessed to ensure their acquisition.
Milestone: A defined, observable marker of an individual’s ability along a developmental continuum.

Traditional Time Based Curriculum is Fixed Time and Focuses on Knowledge Skills & Attitudes and has rotations.   CBME has Variable Time and focuses on outcomes demonstration of competence, and relevant, paced learning opportunities.
Traditional curriculum goal is knowledge acquisition and happens from teacher to learner. CBME goal is knowledge application and happens with Teacher AND learner with relevant role models.
Traditional Assessment is by Summative, Norm referenced and by Evaluation Form.  CBME assessment is by Formative, Criterion referenced and by Evaluation Portfolio.
